This year has been tough. I kept thinking there was light at the end of the tunnel but the tunnel just kept getting longer. I don’t feel like I’ve achieved anything and life keeps whooping my ass. So taking this summer to reflect, reinvigorate, and recharge. And play with my kids after all we don’t get many summers when they’re young. Morning Monday! I’m not the only one feeling a bit grey today right? Ok so we didn’t win the football, and it’s raining and grey in the middle of July , and who knows if we can actually travel/hug/cough in public anymore. But there’s always a silver lining. Had an awesome weekend teaching some diy skills to the wonderful attendees of the @chisenhaledance Encounter Bow festival. This wonderful little venue, The Common Room in E3 is soon to be demolished and a permanent structure built in its place. I’ve loved being involved in events in this space over the years, but can’t wait for it to have running water and a proper roof so we can run workshops all year round. I love watching people use a drill for the first time, they always say “that wasn’t as scary as o thought it would be”! Those who can teach… or is it those who can’t?

Those who can teach… or is it those who can’t? Either way, as part of showcasing all the different roles I have I thought you might like to know about the DIY workshops I run.

For over 10 years I have been teaching people how to use a drill, do basic plumbing jobs, tiling and decorating. I started this off with a 4 week course many moons ago calls “Tools For the Terrified” and after attending the course all 30 attendees were slightly less terrified. Which really made my heart sing!

I love teaching people how to put stuff on walls and seeing their faces when they use a drill for the first time is always uplifting.

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to run many workshops lately (thanks Covid) because I really need people to be hands on with the tools, to give them confidence to take that skill home and out it into practice.

But one day they’ll be back in full force, tooling people up to tackle small jobs in their own homes. Not only does this mean that people can make their home their own, but it also saves them money and time by being able to do it themselves. And yep I have even taught kids how to use a drill, teach them young I say!

Oh and it makes you a responsible and educated homeowner when you understand how things around your home work. So you know not to ignore that damp patch….

I can’t wait to get back to empowering the nation through power tools. But until then if you are local to Roman Road in E3 on Saturday 12th June come down the The Common Room to get your hands on some power tools in a mini workshop for @romanroadtrust.

Sometimes, although much less frequently then I used to (#gettingtooldforthis) I do some physical labour.

I paint, I fix, I put up, I break down. Whatever the job on offer needs. When I ran a business I was on site a lot, tiling, labouring, painting, anything to help the trades on site move the job along.

And although I do a lot less then I used to, there are still occasions when I get my hands dirty. Especially in my property management role where there are sometimes small jobs that just need done and I’m on site anyway, so I may as well do them.

Over the years I’ve learnt what my strengths are and I’ve learnt what I enjoy. I have to say, the jobs I like to do most are not the ones that involve making things look pretty - I was never really that girl! They are the jobs where I get to smash things up and break things down.

I’ve never been a delicate person. I prefer to attack life ferociously and embrace the chaos! So give me wall that needs knocking through and I’m your girl 🤪

Asking someone what their jobs is a common conversation starter. But it’s something I find hard to answer. So here’s a little mini series of my work.

Property Management - what does that that actually mean?

This week has involved a lot of property management. Which means is I check out properties on behalf of the landlord to make sure they are no problems.

I conduct quarterly inspections, or I can be responsible for works during vacant periods. So if the tenant or the landlord has an issue with the property and needs to get some work done, I will manage that process.

I will source and project manage any trades that are needed on site and check out the work that has been done.

Sometimes this is simple, like this week I check on some electrical work and then changed a broken basin waste.

Sometimes it’s more complex, for example a property I was looking after last year had signs of water ingress. It was my job to try and investigate this through a number of different routes including, windows, and repointing. It turned out to be a leak from a shower valve behind the wall from an upstairs bathroom.

I then had to work will all parties including the insurance companies to try and get this fixed and the damage repaired.

Property Management isn’t necessarily sexy but it is important. What tenants ignore or don’t notice can cause large issues if left unresolved so it’s up to me to ensure that small problems don’t escalate to larger costly issues.

What it means for me? Lots of really really boring pictures on my phone!

So I wear a lot of different hats. Someone recently asked me what I do and I struggled to answer them.

When I ran a business I had my elevator pitch down “I run a property maintaince company with female tradespeople. So we do bathroom, kitchen refits, decorating, tiling, plumbing etc with an all female team.”

It was so easy to describe what I did so succinctly. Now I do a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, and I do the Hokey Cokey and I shake it all about.

Sine I sold my property maintenance business (Home Jane) I have done a number of different projects that make up my freelance life. From writing books, to project management, to teaching kids DIY, to tackling DIY on the telly - no week is ever the same.

Over the next few weeks I’ll document a few of my jobs so you can really see how varied life can be.

But for now, hats off, time for a cuppa and the weekend to start.
