[COLAB] Sugru, a mouldable glue which sets super hard, is such a handy little product that I’ve been singing its praises for a while, it really fits with my ‘repair and reuse’ ethos, so I’m over the moon to now officially be collaborating with them 😊

Lockdown DIY might be a welcome distraction these days. Those niggly jobs which we put off in ‘normal times’ as we’re too busy or distracted, could actually finally get done. I wouldn’t suggest taking on a big project right now, it’s not the time to be buying supplies or hiring specialist tools (and frankly who needs the extra stress). Plus we don’t want any DIY related A&E visits (protect the NHS)! But smaller, simple home fixes can easily be completed in a productive afternoon. I contributed to a @guardian article this week which discusses 10 of these easy tasks, most of which can be done by beginners with the most basic toolbox. Here’s the list - and if you feel motivated the link to the full piece is in my bio.

✔️Simple sewing. A good time to make do and mend: Got a hole to fix or some trousers to shorten?
✔️Hanging pictures - It can’t just be me who has a pile of pictures propped against the wall, can it?
✔️Hanging shelves, or other heavier items. Heavier items need a bit more care so good to follow advice.
✔️Resealing your bath (who doesn’t need to do this?!)
✔️Making bookshelves
✔️Fixing a dripping tap
✔️Filling cracks
✔️Unblocking a drain - actually really simply done with kitchen staples
✔️A stuck door - some useful tips so that you might be able to do a DIY fix
✔️Dealing with draughts (you might not be feeling them now, but you’ll thank yourself come November)

Ticking a few of these off now could be quite satisfying, save you some cash and free up your time for fun stuff when normality returns 🙏👏

We are finally getting round to some of those jobs

We are finally getting round to some of those jobs that we’ve been meaning to do for ages. It’s weird, sometimes I feel like there is zero time in this lockdown malarky; the house is always a mess and needs tidying and someone always needs fed. But then there are other times when the hours seem endless... In those times we’re trying to find the motivation to get stuff done 💪🛠

Today we’re fixing a fence panel that came down in Storm Jorge! The new panel is just 1cm too wide to fit the fence posts 😬IRRITATING.
So I have to trim it down, just 5mm off each side. Here I’m using a jigsaw, which really isn’t ideal actually. A circular saw would have been better but I don’t have one and now is not the time to be borrowing or hiring one really. So making do with what I got!

Also I’ve got my safety goggles and my gloves, essential safety gear for sawing jobs.
AND I’ve got my DIY buddy, always good to have, especially when you have really annoying jobs to do. Teamwork really does make a difference. 🤝

With fewer trades people at work at the mo we’re all going to have to learn to be a bit more self-sufficient around the house over the next few weeks.
I’ll be sharing some advice here for keeping your home ship-shape.
Here’s my first tip:
📣 Everyone please please locate your mains stopcock and learn how to switch it off!
💧💧💧
We’re all able to shut off the mains water supply to our properties if we’ve got a leak anywhere in the home or if we’re having plumbing work done. We do this by locating the mains stopcock and switching it off. The stopcock is normally situated close to where the supply enters the house. Mine is a lever and is in the horizontal position normally (when it’s open and water is flowing) and switched to vertical to stop the water supply.

Knowing this and acting quickly to stop the water could one day save you a lot of money repairing water damage.

After self-isolation and focussing on family-time

After self-isolation and focussing on family-time I’m back on here and figuring everything out in this new world, as we all are. But as we’re all stuck in our homes seeing a lot of our own four walls (and each other 😬) the damp patches and peeling point could start to grate and we might have the free time on our hands to fix ‘em. Check in with me here as I give some tips on how to keep your house in tip-top shape while we’re all staying home. Home maintenance could even be a welcome distraction from the isolation! Like everyone, I just need to figure out first how to juggle work/ kids/ home schooling/ husband working from home. 🤯
